The Subtle Art of Not Giving a Fuck: A Counterintuitive Approach to Living a Good Life (outset published in 2016) is the second book by blogger and writer Marker Manson.[ane] In information technology, Manson argues that life's struggles give it meaning, and that the mindless positivity of typical self-assist books is neither practical nor helpful. It was a New York Times and Globe and Postal service bestseller.

The Subtle Art of Not Giving a Fuck was published under the imprint of HarperOne, a division of HarperCollins Publishers, and was released on September 13, 2016.[two]

As of May 2019, over 8 million copies of the book had been sold.[3]

The volume is a reaction to the self-help industry and what Manson saw equally a culture of mindless positivity that is not practical or helpful for most people.[4] Manson uses many of his own personal experiences to illustrate how life's struggles often give it more meaning, which, he argues, is a better approach than constantly trying to be happy.[5] Manson's approach and writing manner have been categorized by some equally contrarian to the full general cocky-help industry, using blunt honesty and profanity to illustrate his ideas.[5] [six]

The book has nine capacity. The first chapter, Don't Effort, is named after the philosophy of Charles Bukowski, who served as a major inspiration for the whole book.

The Subtle Fine art of Non Giving a Fuck is a book nearly finding meaning in important things in life and only having those values that an individual can control. Whatever value (such as popularity) that is not nether a person's control, is a bad value to take and a person should strive to replace it with something more controllable such as punctuality, honesty, or kindness. Manson further advises avoiding claiming certainty almost the knowledge that is out of one'southward grasp and not worry about leaving a legacy for the posterity. Instead of worrying near building a torso of piece of work as a legacy, one should seek to create joy in the moment for one'southward self and those around.[ane]

The Subtle Art of Non Giving a Fuck get-go appeared on the New York Times Bestseller List at #6 for the category of How-to and Miscellaneous for the week of October two, 2016.[8] It reached #ane for the first time on July 16, 2017.[9] As of the finish of May 2020, the volume has spent 179 weeks on the New York Times Bestseller list.[10]

The volume also appeared on the Washington Post Bestseller Listing at #9 in the Non-fiction/General category for the calendar week of September 25, 2016,[11] and on the Toronto Star List at #i in the Self-Improvement category on September 23, 2016.[12] In 2017, it was the best-selling nonfiction book from Barnes & Noble,[xiii] the #4 acknowledged book on all of Amazon.com,[14] and the #9 best-selling book in Canada.[15]

Kirkus Reviews said that the book was "[a] proficient yardstick past which self-improvement books should be measured."[16]

The book was noted equally a prominent instance of an manufacture wide tendency of swear words in book titles during the 2010s.[17] [18]

Critics have been quick to note that the credible lack of sophistication in language and way of the volume is a clever disguise for more serious value-related content of the book.[19]
