Description [edit | edit source]

The County was named for Daniel Stewart, a Revolutionary War veteran, and fighter against American Indians. He was 1 of the four corking-grandfathers of U.S. president Theodore Roosevelt. The County is located in the west central expanse of the state.[ane]

Probate Court has nascence, death and burial records from 1927, matrimony records from 1828 and probate records.
Clerk Superior Court has divorce, court and land records from 1830.[2]

1922 The courthouse at Lumpkin burned 21 April 1922. County records remained safe in fire-proof vaults.[4]

Probate Records [edit | edit source]

Colonial courts kept some early probate records.  From 1777 to 1798 and since 1852, the courtroom of ordinary or register of probates has kept probate and guardianship records.  The junior court handled probate and guardianship matters from 1798 to 1852.

Many probate records to the 1930s and 1940s are at the Georgia Department of Athenaeum and History and the Family History Library on microfilm.

Content: Probate Records may give the decedent'southward date of death, names of his or her spouse, children, parents, siblings, in-laws, neighbors, associates, relatives, and their place of residence.

Tax Records [edit | edit source]

Taxes were levied on complimentary white males over 21 and all slaves upward to age 60. These persons are referred to as "polls." Taxation listings, or digests, of a county generally list the taxable landowners and other polls and the amount of tax. The records for each county are divided by militia district.
